Washington Football Team: 7-round all-Senior Bowl mock draft
Round 7, Pick 212: CB Tre Brown, Oklahoma
Round 7 tends to be a good time to target slot receivers and slot cornerbacks because they’ll often slip due to size concerns. Washington unearthed a gem in this round a couple of years ago with Jimmy Moreland, and they could look to strike gold here again.
Washington will need some cornerback depth this offseason. Retaining Ronald Darby should be a top priority, but Fabian Moreau is also set to hit the market. He seems unlikely to return, so adding another young corner in the draft would be sensible.
Tre Brown qualifies. The Oklahoma Sooner was a three-year starter and was very productive while mostly playing in the slot. He had 12 pass defenses in 2018, 11 in 2019, and a career-high three interceptions last year.
Brown showed well at the Senior Bowl by all accounts. If he can continue to serve as a good tackler (he averaged 43 tackles per year as a starter) while retaining his ball skills, Brown will have a chance to make an impact as a slot option that could play in packages where Washington uses Moreland outside.
Brown only has a 5-foot-9 frame and a 72-inch wingspan, but smaller defensive backs often compensate for their size with their quickness and physicality in the slot. Brown will have to do that to find a role in Washington, but at this point in the draft with the team needing cornerback depth, Brown is the best option available.
It’s unlikely that Washington will pick only players that participated in the Senior Bowl, but the team will surely have its eye on these prospects. They could make a big difference for the team as starters or added depth pieces. And if Washington had a draft like this, their chances of compete would surely be high — provided that they find the right quarterback to lead the charge for this year.
