Round 4, Pick 117: QB Kellen Mond, Texas A&M

In an ideal world, the Washington Football Team wouldn’t wait this long to take a quarterback. That said, of the Senior Bowl crop, only Mac Jones figures into the mix as a potential first-round pick. After that, the players available are more potential based.

So, with us passing on Jones in this mock, it made more sense to take a flyer on a mid-round prospect. That’s exactly what Kellen Mond represents.

Mond is a tough case study at the quarterback position. He was a four-year player and three-year starter at Texas A&M, but he was very up-and-down as a passer. Some weeks, he would look great throwing the ball and would place accurate passes on target to his receivers. Other times, he was erratic and did most of his damage with his legs.

There are several positives with Mond and they were on display during the Senior Bowl. He has great mobility and escapability. He’s tough to bring down and he usually keeps the chains moving in the positive direction because of this ability. He also significantly cut down on his turnovers last year (just three interceptions) and improved his completion percentage in each of his four years with the Aggies. His improvement there is certainly noteworthy.

However, Mond’s inconsistency will hurt him. The potential is there for him to be a multi-dimension starting quarterback in the NFL, but he has to improve his consistency throwing the ball more than anything else. Either way, he profiles as a nice, mobile backup and project quarterback and was noted as a good leader during his time at Texas A&M. His 6-foot-3, 217-pound frame is pretty good as well.

With Washington, Mond would have a chance to battle with Kyle Allen, Taylor Heinicke, and whoever else Washington brings it at quarterback for the starting and backup jobs. He would rosterable and could play a Taysom Hill/Jalen Hurts type role as a rookie if Scott Turner gets creative with their offensive packages.

Jamie Newman was the other option available to consider at this spot, but Mond has more upside than Newman at this point. And the experience he has should allow Mond to quickly adapt to the NFL level and let the team read quickly what type of ceiling he may have.
