Round 3, Pick 82: TE Hunter Long, Boston College

One area that the Washington Football Team needs to upgrade is their tight end depth. Logan Thomas turned out to be an excellent signing by Washington, but beyond him, the team has next to nothing.

Marcus Baugh. Jeremy Sprinkle. Temarrick Hemingway. All of those guys are back-end roster fodder. Keeping one as a blocking tight end is fine, but adding a true No. 2 tight end that can complement Thomas and add another potential weapon to the offense would be a good move.

That’s where Hunter Long would come in. As I noted in a recent piece, the Boston College product is one of the better tight ends in the draft and should have a chance to pair well with Thomas.

"Long is considered to be one of the better tight ends at the Senior Bowl — if not, the best. Long has shown well in blocking drills this week, which is hardly a surprise given the ground-dominant rushing attack he played in during his first couple of years with the BC program, but he has also shown solid receiving ability. His 6-foot-5 frame will allow him to hold up well in the NFL and while he’s not a dynamic athlete, he can be a complete player. Long would complement Thomas well. Both are physically imposing, but Long could serve as more of a blocker and open things up for Thomas in the passing game."

At this stage in the third round, getting a tight end like Long is a good value. If all goes well, he could be the 1B to Thomas’ 1A. At the very least, it would give Washington some needed depth and pass-catching ability on offense.

One of the major themes of this draft should be to add as many weapons as possible for this offense. Long would suffice and while he might not be the sexiest pick, adding a game-breaker like Toney and a steady, solid, well-rounded player like Long would be an upgrade for the Washington offense. He’s a classic high-floor player that carries just enough upside to sneak into Day 2 of the draft.
