Five prospects the Washington Football Team should draft after Senior Bowl
In the first half, it looked like there wasn’t going to be a standout quarterback in this game. But in the second half, Kellen Mond got himself into a rhythm and established himself as the biggest winner at the position from the Senior Bowl game.
Mond started the game inaccurately and had trouble throwing a tight ball amid strong winds in Mobile. However, in the second half, he figured it out. Mond threw with accuracy, anticipation, and read the field well.
Before Mond started playing well, the National Team was leading the American Team 13-0. Mond then led the American Team on back-to-back scoring drives and two-point conversions. On these drives, Mond may countless great throws.
Mond hit Shi Smith over the middle with a beautiful spiral to get into the red zone. He found Amari Rodgers and perfectly placed a throw between a couple of defenders in the end-zone. Rodgers made a nice catch but the ball was put where only he could grab it.
Later, Mond would scramble for a two-point conversion, find Josh Palmer for another TD on a well-timed slant pass, and hit Rodgers for two after avoiding pressure and putting a perfect throw over a defender and right on Rodgers’ hands.
Mond showed a little bit of everything on Sunday. He showed off his top-shelf mobility, his ability to throw on the run, and most importantly, he showcased what his ceiling can be when he’s in rhythm. He needs to improve his consistency, as evidenced by the difference between his first and second-half performances, but he took a step forward in this game.
Washington needs a quarterback and will be taking a look at all options this offseason. If they don’t take a first-round quarterback, sign a starter in free agency, or trade for a starter, Mond represents a good option on Day 2 or in the very early stages of Day 3 — if he lasts that long.
