Andy Reid’s draft philosophy has always been to build up in the trenches. Whether it’s on the offensive or defensive line, the veteran head coach loves adding big-bodied guys to improve his team’s depth.

This year, the Chiefs could stand to add some better depth on the offensive line. They had to rely on Mike Remmers when Mitchell Schwartz went out for the year, and while Remmers was fine in that role, the team could stand to add an upgrade over him and a potential longer-term replacement for either him or Eric Fisher, who are both into their 30s now. And Fisher just suffered an Achilles injury against the Bills, so his status for the start of the 2021 campaign is uncertain.

Liam Eichenberg is a nice pickup here anyway. The Notre Dame tackle has three years of starting experience on the left side of the line and was one of the better left tackles in college football. He has a solid frame (6-foot-6, 302 pounds) and he could easily become a strong starter on the left side during his career.

Eichenberg would be, at worst, a swing tackle early in his career and at best, he’d be an ideal replacement for Fisher if he has to miss time. The Chiefs could also explore kicking one of their tackles inside to guard if Eichenberg impresses and they want to prolong the career of one of their veterans.

No matt how you look at it, Eichenberg fits Reid’s draft strategy and with the team having four O-Linemen set to hit free agency, adding him makes sense. The team could opt for an interior lineman like Wyatt Davis or Creed Humphrey instead, but Eichenberg is the best of the bunch, so adding him and figuring out where to play everyone later seems like the best move.

It’s still very early in mock draft season, so needless to say, these projections will change throughout the year. We’ll have plenty more of them as time goes on here at Riggo’s Rag, so stay tuned for all the latest updates!
