This is probably more indicative of Trey Lance’s floor at this point than anything else. The North Dakota State quarterback is packed with potential and though he could only play in one game last year after the FCS canceled play, he will still be a highly-regarded prospect.

Lance was a one-year starter for the Bison and put up elite numbers. He played in 16 games, completed 67 percent of his passes, threw for 2,786 yards, and logged 28 passing touchdowns. On the ground, he totaled 1,100 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs. Incredibly, he didn’t throw a single interception.

For the next level, Lance looks like a modern NFL quarterback. He has prototypical 6-foot-4 size, a great arm overall, and a smooth, fluid, consistent throwing motion that is reminiscent of some of the league’s elite quarterbacks. His mobility is obviously a plus, too, and with the way the game is trending, that will be a big-time selling point as he looks to cement himself as a top-10 pick.

Still, there are some concerns for Lance. He was just a one-year starter, so his experience is lacking. He did lead North Dakota State to an FCS title, but it would’ve been nice to see him get another year under his belt.

Elsewhere, there are some concerns about Lance making the jump in competition right away, especially after what mostly amounted to a year off. As such, he may need a bit more time to develop than the other top quarterbacks in this class, and it’s possible that sitting out a year and working with an NFL coaching staff could do wonders for him.

The risks are certainly something to keep an eye on, but Kyle Shanahan has done well developing offenses during his time in the NFL, and perhaps he could get Lance up to speed on everything quickly. Either way, with CJ Beathard set to hit free agency, Jimmy Garoppolo being a potential trade or release candidate, and Nick Mullens coming off a year during which he struggled, adding a high-ceiling player at the quarterback spot makes sense.

Lance would give the 49ers some upside at QB and it’s possible he could be the best quarterback in this class. Snapping him up at 12 could prove prudent for the 49ers and even if they need to roll with a veteran until Lance is ready, they will set themselves up for long-term success with this pick.
