Offseason Thoughts

The Washington Football Team will be able to carry $15.8M of cap space from 2020 to 2021.  This amount will be added to the expected cap space of $35M for 2021.  That would place Washington at roughly $50.8M this offseason.

These figures are based on an expected cap limit of $175M.  However, it’s possible that the actual cap will be around $195M.  This would give the front office about $70M to work with – a substantial figure.

Alex Smith wants to continue his playing career, but is that realistic?  Will he give the Washington Football Team any cap relief?  Will the team make him a post-June 1st cap casualty (such a move would add $14.7M to the team cap space)?  No one knows what may happen, but we’ll stay on top of it.

With numerous changes coming to the linebacker unit, Josh Harvey-Clemons could resume his career in Washington and may not face a numbers crunch.

Look for a long term deal to be completed with OG Brandon Scherff in the coming weeks.

Here are some players that must have a superb offseason if they hope to be on the roster this fall:  FS/ST Troy Apke, WR/PR Steven Sims, TE Thad Moss, RB Bryce Love, and OT Geron Christian.

With the addition of new General Manager Martin Mayhew and the likely addition of Marty Hurney to a high ranking position in the football office, the Washington Football Team can now boast of one of the strongest front offices in the NFL.

The recent release of Shaun Dion Hamilton wasn’t too much of a surprise.  He had almost no impact in 2020.  However, it is a surprise to see this move being made before free agency begins.  The front office obviously didn’t think he had any trade value and that is easy to see.

The next free agency blueprint update will come shortly after the Super Bowl – unless there is breaking news to report or any new information becomes available.
