5. LT Cornelius Lucas

Here we reach one of the bigger surprises on the offensive line this year. Cornelius Lucas. When he was first signed in free agency he could be written off as a depth signing. At first, that is what he was. However, when he started in Week 7 against the Cowboys, it was clear he was not just depth.

Lucas was good. Against pass rushers, he is strong and has a good anchor. His long wingspan on his 6-foot-8 frame helps him out a lot as well. He allowed only two sacks this year and committed just one penalty.

Against the run, however, he can be inconsistent. He does well at getting to the second level at times. Other times his lack of athleticism is apparent. He could still be better against the run. More consistent.

Cornelius Lucas vastly played above expectations. He was very solid in pass protection but an inconsistent run blocker. I think he can be the starter at left tackle next year for Washington. However, given his age (30 at the start of the 2021 season) and lack of starter reps, it should not deter Washington from seeking the future left tackle.

For now though, Lucas is a very good piece to the offensive line room. Whether he is a starter or very good depth, his presence next year will be welcomed.
