10 potential general manager candidates for the Washington Football Team
The Washington fan base loves Kyle Smith, and it’s easy to see why. He has done a great job managing the team’s draft process over the last few years and was rewarded with the VP of Player Personnel title as a result.
Smith has been instrumental in helping to build the Washington defense into a strength. He played a part in the decision to use four first-round draft picks on the defensive line and also added key contributors like Kendall Fuller, Kam Curl, and Cole Holcomb to the team.
On the offensive side of the ball, Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson have proven to be third-round steals, and while there were more whiffs on this side of the ball than the other, they still weren’t massive outside of Dwayne Haskins. And as everybody knows, that was clearly a Dan Snyder decision.
Smith clearly has an eye for talent, he’s young, and fans want to keep him around. The only question is, does the team think he’s ready for the GM title? Evidently, they don’t. Otherwise, they would’ve promoted him already and they wouldn’t be so focused on adding an outside candidate to the GM spot.
That said, Smith has a bright future and should be viewed as the top GM option. The reason for that? Losing him would be a big blow to the team’s draft success which has played a big role in their ability to rebuild rapidly under Ron Rivera.
Smith may not get the title this time around, but he’s surely a great candidate for a role. In the near future, he will be getting calls to interview for GM spots, and though they didn’t materialize this cycle, Washington has to know what they have with him in tow.
Hopefully, even if he’s not named GM, Smith will stick around. As long as he does, Washington will be able to find plenty of diamonds in the rough and replenish their talent pool via the draft every year. That’s a winning formula.
