Washington Football Team: Studs and duds from Week 17 win over Eagles
Stud: EDGE Chase Young
For all the issues that Washington has had at quarterback this year, I don’t think they have regretted taking Chase Young No. 2 overall for one second. Young has quickly emerged as one of the league’s best pass rushers and the pressure he generated against the Eagles was critical to helping Washington win this one.
One play from Young stands out, and it’s not one that will show up on every stat sheet. It came on the first Washington defensive drive of the half.
It was a third-and-three for the Eagles and Jalen Hurts was scrambling out of the pocket to his right with his eyes downfield. He was motioning to his receiver to do something specific and was getting set to throw when he suddenly felt Young screaming up behind him. Hurts had to rush the throw and it fell incomplete.

That may sound like a normal play, but Young had come from all the way on the left-tackle-side of the play to chase down Hurts. He did that despite being a solid 44 pounds heavier than the Eagles quarterback. That type of athletic ability is incredibly rare and it makes him a threat to make a play every time he’s on the field.
Young also had a nice sack of Hurts when he sniffed out an RPO, faked liked he was going after the running back, and quickly turned back upfield to wallop Hurts. Again, you don’t see that type of athletic ability very often.
Young finished up the day with a sack, a tackle for loss, three quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery that set up Washington’s insurance field goal. He had an excellent rookie season and ended the year with 7.5 sacks. He surely should win Defensive Rookie of the Year and this game will just add more to his already-strong career highlight reel.
Also, as usual, Montez Sweat had a great game. He could’ve just as easily been included as a stud here as a partner for Young. He had five tackles, a sack, a pass defense, and played a key role in Young’s fumble recovery that set up points for Washington.
