Dud No. 3 – The Eagles

The Eagles weren’t supposed to beat the Saints. Their benching of Carson Wentz was supposed to serve as the nail in the coffin for the 2017 Super Bowl winner. But Jalen Hurts infused Philadelphia with a jolt of life, and they managed to best New Orleans in a pivotal NFC matchup.

The Eagles are now clinging to a bit of hope in the NFC East race, and while Washington has a 1.5-game cushion, courtesy of their four-game winning streak, they aren’t as safe as one would like to think. Three games remain, and before Philadelphia, Washington plays Seattle and Carolina. Philadelphia plays Arizona and Dallas.

If Philadelphia enters Week 17 at 6-8-1, and Washington enters at 7-8 or 6-9, that could be a win-and-you’re-in game. Washington has done enough to earn them that security ahead of Week 17 and extend their playoff window, but if they can’t take care of business in Week 15 and Week 16, the pressure will be maximized in the season finale.

The Giants also remain in the hunt at 5-8, but they play the Browns and the Ravens ahead of their finale, and after their uninspiring effort in Week 14, it seems more likely that they wind up 5-10 by Week 17. The Eagles, with an upstart offense led by Hurts, are dangerous again, and they shouldn’t be overlooked anymore.

The Eagles put up a stud-worthy performance on Sunday. But for our purposes, they’re a dud. Because we’re rooting for the good guys.
