Washington Football Team studs and duds from Week 13 win over Steelers
Washington Football Team Stud: WR Cam Sims
Logan Thomas was the steady threat for Washington during their game against the Steelers, but it was Cam Sims who really sparked the Washington offense.
There were two plays that stand out from Sims’ day. The first was the reception he made with time winding down in the first half to put Washington in field goal range. Sims showed good athletic ability to win at the line of scrimmage, get into open space, make a catch, and follow a good block from Terry McLaurin to get a first down. That was the first big play of the day for Washington and allowed them to get on the scoreboard and cut the Steelers lead to 11.
In the second half, Sims helped to kickstart the Washington offense on a third-and-long deep in their own territory. He caught a screen pass and did a great job following his blocking downfield to get a first down. By weaving through space and getting the first down, he got a critical first down and from there, the Washington offense took off.
Later on that drive, Washington would score their first touchdown of the day. While it was Peyton Barber who pounded it in and Thomas who set it up with the catch, it was Sims’ catch that really set up that drive and stopped Washington’s negative momentum.
On the day, Sims ended up catching five of his nine targets for 92 yards. It was one of the biggest games of the year and without him, Washington would have had a lot of trouble moving the ball against the Steelers defense. If he keeps playing like this, he may earn a chance to hold down the No. 2 receiver position long-term.
And at the very least, he will certainly factor into the competition there in the present and future.
