Washington Football Team Stud: TE Logan Thomas

Logan Thomas’ development as a tight end has been amazing to watch this season and the last few weeks, he has really made the leap. On Monday against the Steelers, he put together the best performance of his career.

Against the Steelers, Thomas was nothing short of superb. He led the team in catches in receiving yards with 98, caught nine passes, and found the end-zone for the game-tying touchdown. He was every bit as good as those numbers indicate.

Early in the game when Washington was struggling to move the ball on offense, Thomas was the only receiver who was able to do anything. He made a couple of great plays including a stellar one-handed catch and a play that saw him catch a ball on the sideline, make a man miss, and dive for a first down. Unfortunately, the ref missed that he got the first and a replay didn’t show enough to overturn the call (though it was pretty clear that he made it), but still, Thomas was producing.

Thomas’ athletic ability helped keep the Steelers off-balance. The defense was hell-bent on guarding Terry McLaurin, but they didn’t have a defender that could stick with Thomas and tackle him. Nor did they have a plan in place to double-team Thomas and take him away from Alex Smith. That’s why Smith kept finding Thomas, including when they connect for a TD on a play during which Thomas was wide open streaking toward the end-zone.

Thomas took advantage of the opportunity and at this point, he truly looks like a potential top tight end moving forward. Though he’s 29, he’s still learning the position and if he can keep growing and using his athleticism to make plays, he can be a solid starter for Washington moving forward.

Unearthing a solid starting tight end from a low-budget, under-the-radar free agent signing isn’t easy to do, but it appears that Washington has done just that. Thomas was a total stud against the Steelers and hopefully, this is the beginning of a fruitful connection between him and Smith.
