Buying into impactful leadership and patience at QB

In the meantime, we have a division to win.

The National consensus is that Washington and/or any team who represents the NFC East as the division champions this year are only doing so by default.

But I remind them of the 2010 Seattle Seahawks.  That team led by Pete Carrol in his first season as their coach stumbled into the playoffs at 7-9.  Sure, they were not a threat to win the Super Bowl that season, but they still won a playoff game and gained valuable experience.  They were building a culture.

More from Commanders News

They had an aging veteran QB named Matt Hasselbeck (sound familiar) whose best days were behind him in 2010.  The next year they went with Tavaris Jackson. But again, they struggled to a 7-9 record.  Year 3 they signed Matt Flynn away from the Packers with a hefty three-year free agent contract.

However, it was a young third-round rookie QB named Russell Wilson who won the job and the rest is history.  Sure, they lucked out with Wilson, but Carroll was developing a culture in Seattle.  The team feeds off it, not sure there’s a team in the league where it’s more evident.

The point is, don’t worry and obsess about the QB position. Eventually, they’ll figure out the long term option at QB. For now and maybe even next year, Alex Smith is perfectly capable.  In the meantime, it’s the culture that Rivera is creating on the football side that matters.

It’s the ability of Rivera and Kyle Smith to work together to bring the best possible talent to Washington.  It’s team President Jason Wright who is creating a workplace that professionals want to be a part of.  A respectable culture that puts employees and fans first.

I understand there are fans that don’t buy into it.  They don’t trust Dan Snyder.  And Maybe Snyder doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. This franchise has descended to depths that I never imagined possible 20 years ago. But I’m giving it to him one more time.

Why?  Because the future is now.  I refuse to live in the past.  This new regime is doing things right from every perspective.  Good things happen when you surround yourself with quality people.  Let’s hope Dan has learned the long hard way and he allows these competent professionals to do their jobs, all indications (so far) is that he is.

So wake up people, we are in the beginning stages of the “good old days”.  Enjoy them now, don’t sleep on them.  Don’t miss out, you’ll regret it in 20 years.
