Washington Football Team: Three trade deadline deals to consider
Trade No. 3 – Dwayne Haskins to the Colts
Arizona did it with Josh Rosen. It’s time for Washington to do it with Dwayne Haskins.
While many national media members and fans have mixed opinions on the development of Dwayne Haskins, as well as the handling of his career by Ron Rivera, one thing is clear.
Dwayne Haskins’ time with the Washington Football Team has run its course.
Both sides seem to want to depart from one another. With a recent report coming out that Haskins would welcome a new start somewhere else, Ron Rivera and Company likely feel the same. Haskins hasn’t produced up to his first-round pick standards, and Rivera and Scott Turner believe he isn’t the best fit for this offense going forward.
If the Washington Football Team was to move Haskins, now is the time to do so. He likely still has some sort of value left on the open market, and especially at a discounted rate, teams will take the chance.
Rosen was dealt for a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick, I don’t believe Haskins’ value at this point is near that. I wouldn’t expect Day 1 or Day 2 picks for him, but a duo of Day 3 picks would be more reasonable.
Now in his late-30s, Philip Rivers doesn’t have much more time left in the NFL. The Colts still seem to be a quarterback away, and currently don’t have any sort of backup plan on the roster.
Head coach Frank Reich is one of the better offensive minds in the NFL, a disciple of Andy Reid. Reid and his disciples are known to have some of the better offensive schemes and analytically progressive offenses that benefit all quarterbacks.
Haskins is very much a work in progress at the moment, with mechanical flaws that will take seasons to correct. A simplified offense, one that Reich can draw up to benefit the current state of Dwayne Haskins’ game, will pay dividends toward the development of No. 7.
The Colts have nothing to lose here; they are too good of a team to draft one of Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance in 2021, yet they still don’t have a viable option or anyone in development, should Philip Rivers retire after this season.
This is why they should go after Dwayne Haskins, especially at such a discounted price. Haskins is still a former first-round pick that has insane arm talent. His worth at this point is less than what it would’ve been in the 2019 NFL Draft, but there’s still upside to take advantage of. He has the god-given ability to potentially become a starting QB in the NFL.
It’ll be up to Indianapolis to crack the code that is Dwayne Haskins and hopefully unlock a long-term starter for their franchise.
