Dud No. 1 – LB Jon Bostic

Just as a linebacker was the top stud from this game, the top dud award also goes to a linebacker. There weren’t many duds to choose from regardless, but Jon Bostic far and away earned this spot with one very bad play.

In the second half, with the Cowboys’ offense backed up inside their own red zone, Andy Dalton ran up the middle of the field after escaping pressure. He started to slide when defenders closed in, and Bostic, as opposed to missing Dalton, lowered his shoulder and contacted the quarterback in the head and neck area at high speed.

The hit incapacitated Dalton and removed him from the game as he was evaluated for a concussion. Bostic was also ejected for the play, and rightfully so. There wasn’t anything to gain from hitting Dalton as he was already going to the ground, and the move resulted in injury.

Bostic will have to be more aware in the future. The rules in the NFL have developed to prevent these kinds of hits, and by extension prevent the severe head and neck injuries that sometimes come in these scenarios. Bostic displayed a startling lack of situational awareness against Dallas, and it’s entirely likely that his disciplining isn’t yet over.
