Washington Football Team Dud: The two-point conversion attempt

Like I said before, the call to go for two was correct. However, the play that happened was… odd, to say the least.

It looked like the play that was called was a pass play that may have been designed to get the ball to Antonio Gibson out of the backfield on an angle route. He was well-covered on the play, so the ball was in Kyle Allen’s hands with a play to be made.

Allen started by scrambling out to his left as he saw a potential opening to the pylon. Allen isn’t the fastest quarterback, but it looked like he may have a chance to get to the outside corner and just sneak the ball over.

However, Allen evidently didn’t like his chance and instead, he abruptly stopped in the backfield. From there, Allen saw two defenders collapse on him and he hopelessly tried to get the ball to a well-covered Terry McLaurin. At the end of the day, he couldn’t get the ball anywhere near him and it fell harmlessly to the turf.

The fault didn’t necessarily belong to Allen on this play. The call simply wasn’t a great one. There weren’t enough options for Allen and it didn’t look like McLaurin was the first read on the play. The goal should’ve been to get McLaurin open or give him a chance to go up and make a catch. That didn’t happen and instead, the ugly final play occurred.

Going for two was the right call, but if Washington is in this situation again, hopefully, a better play-call will be used. Otherwise, Allen may have similar troubles getting the ball to his playmakers.
