Washington Football Team Dud: Kyle Allen’s turnovers

There was nothing more costly in this contest than the two Washington turnovers. And both of them were the fault of Kyle Allen.

Allen’s first mistake was egregious. He was looking in the direction of Terry McLaurin but he ended up staring down James Bradberry and throwing the ball straight to him. In truth, the ball wasn’t even close to McLaurin and it looked like Bradberry was the intended receiver on the play.

After that misfire, it took the Giants only three plays to get 27 yards and the Darius Slayton touchdown. That put the Giants up 10-0 at the time and it looked like Washington would have trouble staying in this game.

Fast forward to the second half. The game is now tied up at 13 and Washington has the ball. They’re set up to go on a potential go-ahead drive when Allen coughs up the ball in the backfield. It’s an ugly fumble, as he wasn’t really hit all that much on the play. Allen simply lost his grip on the ball. Tae Crowder picked up the loose ball and returned it for a TD. All of a sudden, it’s 20-13 Giants.

As good as Allen was at various points today, the turnovers he made absolutely killed the team. Washington lost the game 20-19. Of the Giants’ 20 points, 14 were set up directly by turnovers. We’ve been saying this all year, but that simply can’t happen if Washington is going to stay competitive, and those turnovers certainly cost them dearly today.

Allen will have to clean up his act against the Cowboys if he is named the starter again as expected. If not, the game against Dallas could go similarly to this one.
