No. 1 – LG Saahdiq Charles

The injury report brought some much-needed good news this week. Not only is Cole Holcomb off the report, but so is fourth-round rookie offensive lineman Saahdiq Charles. Charles was a full participant at practice on Thursday, and rather than spending time at his natural position, tackle, he slid inside to left guard.

The starting unit at practice consisted of Geron Christian, Charles, Chase Roullier, Brandon Scherff, and Morgan Moses, and assuming everyone stays healthy and they reinstate Scherff from injured reserve, that’s probably the lineup they’ll trot out on Sunday. There’s a chance they keep Wes Martin initially to be safe, but it looks like things are in flux.

Looking at that offensive line group, left tackle and left guard are the only pressing question marks, and even Christian has been a bit better than expected this year. If Charles can use his athleticism and anchor to provide a boost on the interior, then he could contribute to the crucial solidification of Washington’s line, which could in turn boost the team’s offensive performance.

Charles won’t have an easy run at things; Leonard Williams is still a very tough matchup on the interior. But there won’t be a constant entity the likes of Aaron Donald this week, and that could enable Charles to have a respectable performance, and maybe even carve out a recurring role for himself at left guard.
