Three keys to victory for the Washington Football Team vs. the Rams
3. Get Antonio Gibson involved in the passing game
Against Baltimore, Washington finally did something many have been asking them to do. Get Antonio Gibson the ball through the air. The former collegiate wide receiver finally got some touches as a receiver.
Gibson didn’t disappoint either. He totaled four catches on five targets for 82 yards. That coupled with 42 on the ground gave him 130 all-purpose yards. Gibson is starting to become a problem.
With Terry McLaurin shaping into an elite receiver that will likely get his yards no matter how much attention he gets, it is apparent Washington finds a reliable second option. With Steven Sims Jr heading to IR, this becomes even more of a pressing need.
Due to the lack of production and inexperience at the rest of the wide receiver position, Gibson may be the best bet to become that second option. Washington needs him to be that legitimate RB/WR combo he was drafted to be.
Scott Turner can help Gibson out on Sunday with this. Throw Gibson some slip screens, halfback screens, shallow crossers. Simple routes to get Gibson in space. He has shown he can make plays after the catch. A large majority of Gibson’s yards came after the catch on Sunday.
Featuring both Gibson and Terry McLaurin in Turner’s offense should allow Washington to be successful against the Rams. If they can do that while making Goff uncomfortable and slowing down Donald, they’ll set themselves up well to pull off a crucial victory.
