Offensive Tackle (5)

Geron Christian, Morgan Moses, Cornelius Lucas, Saahdiq Charles, David Sharpe

At this point, it seems like Geron Christian has, improbably, cemented himself as Washington’s starter at left tackle. Without having seen him play this offseason, it remains to be seen how he’ll actually fare, but if Rivera and John Matsko are confident enough to start him, perhaps he has shown enough improvement to hold his own.

The other spot that appears to be locked down is Morgan Moses. He has averaged 13 penalties a year the past two campaigns, but maybe if he’s healthy he’ll get back to being an above-average starter at the position with new coaching.

Elsewhere, the position is completely unsettled. Truly, anything could happen with the backups. Right now, we have Cornelius Lucas in the swing tackle spot, but he could end up getting cut. The free-agent acquisition hasn’t been impressive so far this offseason and didn’t capitalize on his opportunity to win the left tackle job. Still, he at least has experience, so that has to hold some value.

At first, I was considering Saahdiq Charles and the recently-acquired David Sharpe for one final spot. But then I thought, why not both? Rivera has communicated that he wouldn’t mind keeping extra depth on the offensive line, so they could keep 9-10 O-Linemen if they want.

And it may be a good idea to keep extra depth at tackle as Charles works his way back from a calf injury that has rendered him inactive for a large part of training camp. He’s definitely not ready for game action yet because of the missed reps, but he made not need much time on the IR before getting better. So, keeping an extra tackle and keeping Charles inactive early in the season may be the way to go.

We’ll soon see what depth pieces Washington elects to keep around, but don’t be surprised to see them stock up on O-Line depth because of the unproven nature of the position. Claiming a guy off waivers is also a very real possibility.
