Breaking down the Washington Football Team’s position battles: Tight End
The Rest
Jeremy Sprinkle. The 2017 fifth-round pick was thought to be second on the tight end depth chart coming into this offseason because of his blocking prowess. But thanks to the emergence of Baugh in that arena, it’s unclear whether or not Sprinkle is doing enough to make the team.
Sprinkle should still have a shot to make the team. Rivera’s Carolina Panthers teams tended to carry blocking tight ends on the back end of the roster to help improve the run game. Washington could do the same, but if he doesn’t do enough to impress the coaching staff in his fourth year in the league, he could be cut.
In short, it’s difficult to know where Sprinkle is right now in the pecking order. But Baugh’s presence would seemingly hurt the Arkansas product’s chances of making the team.
Richard Rodgers. Inking Rodgers to a one-year deal during the offseason seemed like a good buy-low move. After all, the former Green Bay Packer has been a solid receiver during his career. He just hadn’t been on the field for most of the past two seasons due to various injuries.
Given Washington’s need for a productive player at tight end, Rodgers was a sensible addition. But so far, it doesn’t seem like he’s made much of an impact in the tight end room. Washington will likely go young at tight end outside of Thomas, so Rodgers’ path to a roster spot is a tough one.
Thaddeus Moss. The undrafted free agent was once thought to have a chance to make the roster, but he didn’t impress the team’s coaching staff much this offseason. He was waived with an injury designation to make room for more offensive line depth. He’ll revert to Washington’s IR if he goes unclaimed on waivers and will get a chance to prove himself in 2021.
The tight end position isn’t likely to be a strong one for Washington, but perhaps a sleeper will emerge and help the team find answers at the position. If not, however, the team will have to find a top tight end during the 2021 offseason to upgrade their offense as a whole.
