Washington Football Team Roster Projection: Updates for Derrius Guice, Reuben Foster
Edge Rusher (3)
Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Ryan Kerrigan
The ceiling on Washington’s group of edge rushers is insane. The top trio will be arguably the best edge group in football and should help be one of the catalysts for Washington’s defense.
Chase Young, the No. 2 overall pick, is a natural pass rusher and logged a whopping 16.5 sacks during his final season at Ohio State. He is a pro-ready prospect and should have a shot at winning Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Across from him, Montez Sweat is a freaky athlete and posted seven sacks during his rookie season. He had the athletic ability needed to find success in a 3-4 defense, but he’s an even better fit for a 4-3 scheme. Jack Del Rio will find the best way to use him and it will be hard for opposing offenses to contain both him and Young.
In some ways, Kerrigan is the forgotten man of the trio. That’s not something that would be said about many players that have averaged 10 sacks per season during their career. Kerrigan will mix into the rotation — in fact, he’ll probably continue to start — and his presence will help keep Sweat and Young fresh.
Carrying just three edge rushers may seem a little slim, but Ryan Anderson may play on the edge a bit while some of the interior players could also kick outside in a pinch, if necessary. But rest assured Washington will keep some extra defensive line depth around if they carry only three edge players in 2020.
