Kamren Curl

Experience: 1st season

Draft Status: 2020 seventh-round pick (216th overall)

2019 Stats (College): 11 games, 76 total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two pass deflections, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one touchdown

2020 Outlook: The stat sheet sheds some light into why the Washington Football Team chose to spend a late-round pick on Kamren Curl of South Carolina. Curl undoubtedly has multifaceted potential, and when he’s in the right position, he can make plays. But his college tape also showed a dire lack of top-end speed that will hurt him at the NFL level, until he sharpens his instincts and reaction time enough to compensate. It will more than likely take some time for that to happen.

Expected Role: Curl’s roster spot is far from guaranteed, but if he was chosen to be kept by Ron Rivera, he’d likely serve a similar role to Jeremy Reaves. His primary value, at this point, would come on special teams, but depending on the situation, his size could prove useful at the strong safety position in spurts.

Status: Like Reaves, Curl is on the outside looking in. He has the draft status on his side, as the team is less likely to cut loose a player whom they just used draft capital on. But Curl doesn’t have enough natural athleticism to quicken his adjustment to the pace of the NFL, and making that transition gradually on the practice squad might be the best thing for him and the 53-man roster.
