Washington Football Team Training Camp Profiles: Cornerback
By Ian Cummings
Simeon Thomas
Experience: 3rd season
Draft Status: 2018 sixth-round pick (188th overall)
2019 Stats: 12 games, zero starts, eight total tackles
2020 Outlook: Simeon Thomas has preexisting experience with the Washington Football Team, as he was signed shortly after the start of the 2020 campaign. At 6-foot-3, 197, he offers elite size at the cornerback position, but he was primarily a special teamer last year, and he hasn’t undergone enough development on defense to fulfill a responsibility there. His outlook is cloudy in 2020, even before considering his four-game suspension that has yet to be served.
Expected Role: Were Thomas to be retained as the team’s fifth or sixth cornerback, he would likely be a reserve player and key special teamer. Standing at 6-foot-3, with mid-4.4 speed, he has the traits necessary to thrive there. But to this point, the mental part of his game still leaves too much to be desired for him to take on significant rotational reps.
Status: Thomas is a likely cut. Although Rivera and Del Rio may find themselves enamored with his physical tools, he needs to develop to solidify a spot. There are other cornerbacks on this list who provide similar special teams value, while supplying more utility on defense.
