Reuben Foster

Experience: 4th season

Draft Status: 2017 first-round pick, 31st overall

2019 Stats: N/a

2020 Outlook: Reuben Foster’s outlook is hard to project. Many were hopeful that he would emerge as the team’s top linebacker last season, but a brutal knee injury in OTAs ensured that he would be out at least a year. He tore multiple knee ligaments and suffered nerve damage in his leg as a result.

Now, Foster is on the comeback trail. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there hasn’t been much of an update on him. For now, he is on the PUP list and it seems possible — if not, probable — that he will miss some time to start the season.

Expected Role: Backup, future starter, and potential injury stash. It seems unlikely that Washington will rush Foster back from injury, so he could begin the season playing in a limited role, if healthy. If he can play in 2020, he may be a starter by the end of the year, but unless he’s close to 100 percent, expect to see him in a backup role.

Status: Injury stash. I anticipate that Foster will be on the PUP list through the first six games of the 2020 NFL season. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems unlikely that Washington will try to rush him back given the severity of his injury. They can learn more about their other linebackers in the meantime and then see where Foster fits in best for the squad.
