Positional Outlook

Things aren’t looking great at the tight end position for Washington. They have some solid complementary pieces, but no top options.

At this point, any combination of the players on the roster could make the team. It could end up being Thomas, Sprinkle, and Moss. It could Rodgers, Hentges, and Wilson. Sure, some outcomes are more likely than others. But in reality, the competition at the position is wide open. And no player has a guaranteed spot.

For that reason, the tight end position will be one of the most intriguing ones to watch during training camp. Ron Rivera has spoken openly about wanting to add competition at all positions, but no position will have more than the tight end position because anything could happen there.

Tight end will probably be a weakness of the team in 2020. And that’s okay. Washington had so many holes to fill during the offseason that they couldn’t possibly fix all of their problems. Tight end was a casualty of that. So, for the time being, they’ll have to operate with a tight end by committee approach.

That won’t be the worst thing. Perhaps someone will emerge as an unexpectedly strong contributor. Or maybe the team will find a rock-solid No. 2 tight end. But if not, tight end will become the top need for Washington to fill during the 2021 offseason.
