Quarterback (2)

Dwayne Haskins, Kyle Allen

It seems pretty obvious that Haskins and Allen will be the two quarterbacks the Redskins keep on the roster come time for final cuts. Haskins, a 2019 first-round pick, is set to enter his first season as the starter for the team.

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Allen was acquired in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick. He will serve as the backup to Haskins after starting most of last season with the Carolina Panthers. Allen faded a bit down the stretch, but the former five-star recruit undeniably has upside and gives the team a decent, young quarterback room.

Alex Smith’s name is currently listed on the Redskins depth chart, but that feels more like a formality than anything else. The quarterback is still working his way back from a gruesome leg injury that he suffered in 2018 against the Houston Texans. Anyone who watched the “Project 11” documentary knows just how devastating that injury and its aftermath have been for the quarterback and while he wants to eventually come back and play for Washington, the odds are against it.

So, for another year, Smith will likely spend the year on the PUP and IR lists. Barring a surprise this year, he’ll try to resume his comeback attempt once again in 2021.

Steven Montez didn’t make the cut here, but the undrafted free agent is another young passer with upside who could make a great practice squad candidate. It will be interesting to see how he fares in an abbreviated offseason, but he has the tools needed to develop at the NFL level. He’s just a raw, developmental project.
