How Cameron Malveaux can make the Redskins roster

Of all the Unheralded Players to be listed so far, Malveaux has the toughest path to the 53-man roster.

At defensive end, three spots are essentially locked up between Chase Young, Montez Sweat, and Ryan Kerrigan, and on the defensive interior, Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis, Daron Payne, and Tim Settle are likely locks as well, with Caleb Brantley also maintaining some security.

There simply isn’t a lot of room for Malveaux to break through. He’ll have to show enough for the Redskins to keep him as an extra defensive lineman. Something that works in his favor, against the numbers, is his versatility as a hybrid on the defensive front.

Malveaux is a much better scheme fit than ends Ryan Anderson and Nate Orchard, and while he has a similar profile to seventh-round rookie James Smith-Williams, Malveaux’s NFL experience could be a difference maker in that regard.

It all comes down to what the Redskins feel they need from their depth pieces on the defensive line. If Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio feel that a player who can play both on the edge and on the interior would be valuable, then Malveaux has the foundation required to prove he can take on that role.

It’s important for Unheralded Players to find a niche which they can thrive in, and luckily for Malveaux, he has that. And as stacked as the odds may be against his favor on the vaunted Redskins defensive line, Malveaux’s flexibility will always give him a chance.
