Offensive Tackle (4)

Cornelius Lucas, Morgan Moses, Saahdiq Charles, Geron Christian

There isn’t much of a set pecking order at offensive tackle right now. It seems likely that Moses will hold onto the starting right tackle job for the moment even despite regressing the past couple of seasons. The reason for that? The left tackle job is far from settled and the team just doesn’t have much proven depth at the position.

Currently, the favorite to earn that starting spot is the veteran tackle Lucas. He found success as a swing option in Chicago last year and while he may be best served staying in that role, he may have to function as a starting stopgap until either Charles or Christian is ready to play. Barring a surprise from the team’s younger tackles, the 6-8 Lucas should make the roster.

Charles is a roster lock after being a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Redskins. If not for character concerns, he probably would’ve gone earlier as he has good athleticism and added needed bulk during the offseason. Now, the only question is, will he be ready to start in 2020? Or will he need some time to adjust to the NFL game? Also, it’s worth noting that the ‘Skins may cross-train him a bit at guard just to see what his potential looks like there.

The biggest question for the Redskins is, who will be the fourth tackle on the roster? At the moment, Christian, a former 2018 third-round pick, should be favored to stick around because of his athletic upside and draft pedigree. But in two seasons so far, he hasn’t played well at all in limited action and won’t be ready for a role in the offense unless he makes a big leap.

Christian is far from a roster lock. And I even considered slotting Timon Parris over him. But for the time being, it makes more sense for Parris to join the practice squad with Christian staying on the team. John Matsko and the Redskins’ new coaching staff will have to see what they can get out of Christian. He’s on the inside of the roster bubble for now, but if he doesn’t show a lot of improvement before the 2020 season, he could be a cut candidate.
