Special Teams (3)

Tress Way, Dustin Hopkins, Nick Sundberg

It’s best not to overthink this position. The Redskins didn’t bring in any competition at punter, kicker, or long snapper this year. And with good reason. They didn’t need to.

Way was a first-time Pro Bowler last season and led the league in punting average for the second time in his career. He averaged 49.6 yards per punt and had an unbelievable 79-yard punt, good for longest in the league. Way was a second-team All-Pro, too, so the Redskins have no reason to replace one of the best punters in the league.

Hopkins went 25 of 30 on field goals last season, marking the fifth consecutive year that he has made at least 81 percent of his field goal opportunities. The one knock on him previously was that his range wasn’t very good but in the past two seasons, he has made 6 of 8 kicks from 50-plus yards. Prior to 2018, he was just 5 of 13 from that distance.

Either way, Hopkins has progressed nicely and at 29, he still could have another decade in him if all goes well.

As for Sundberg, he is officially the longest-tenured Redskin with Trent Williams now in San Francisco. Sundberg has played in 136 games for the ‘Skins and has only missed five total games over the past six seasons after some health concerns during the earlier stages of his career. The long snapper, 33 in July, will likely keep going for at least another year.
