S Antoine Winfield Jr., Minnesota

If the Redskins are going to go defense with this pick, they should absolutely target a safety. The position has been somewhat devalued in recent years by an influx of quality players at the position. And this year, it’s no different.

Xavier McKinney is probably a top-20 — or at least, top-25 — player in this class. Yet he’s still on the board. So if Grant Delpit. And Kyle Dugger. And Jeremy Chinn. That’s four safeties who should probably find homes at some point before the 75th overall pick.

And Winfield makes five. The Minnesota product was discussed as a potential first-round sleeper, but with the position taking a hit, he could slide a bit in the second round.

Winfield is a true ballhawk and last year for the Golden Gophers, he logged a whopping seven interceptions. He’s a bit on the smaller side — much like his father, a former first-round draft pick — but there’s no reason to think that he shouldn’t find success at the next level.

Of the players listed here, Winfield is the most likely to be off the board when the Redskins are picking. That said, if other safeties rise in the draft process or the position continues to drop, could the ‘Skins get lucky and get a steal? It’s at least possible.

Winfield would be a massive upgrade next to Landon Collins and it would push Sean Davis into a backup role to give the team depth at the position. If Winfield is somehow on the board at 66, they shouldn’t hesitate to grab him and continue to build things up on that side of the ball.

We’ll see soon enough what the Redskins do. These are just the top options for them to consider when they’re on the clock with the 66th overall pick.
