Picks 4-8

5. Detroit Lions (via MIA): CB Jeff Okudah, Ohio State. The Lions have a few options but it looks like they’re choosing between Derrick Brown and Jeff Okudah at this spot. I had Brown to them in my last mock, but I’m going back to Okudah here.

The Lions would have a strong three-man corner unit with Okudah, Desmond Trufant, and Justin Coleman in the fold. That plus the acquisition of Duron Harmon would do a lot to strengthen their secondary and give them at least one strong unit on defense. For a coaching staff that needs to win now to stick around, that sounds pretty appealing, so Okudah should be the favorite here, especially if the Lions are picking up some extra draft capital outside of the first round.

6. Los Angeles Chargers: QB Justin Herbert, Oregon. The Chargers seem content to give Tyrod Taylor a chance to start this year. And that’s fine for Herbert. He can sit to start his career and familiarize himself with every aspect of the Chargers’ offense.

Herbert is whip-smart, has a 6-foot-6 frame, good mobility, and a very strong arm. He looks like a prototypical pocket passer at the next level but it may take him some time to develop. The Chargers would be able to give him the time needed to do that because they like Taylor enough to trust him. And given his smarts, Herbert could be a master of the playbook by the time he’s on the field in L.A.

7. Carolina Panthers: DL Derrick Brown, Auburn. Brown is probably the Panthers’ top target here. If the Lions take him, things could get a bit weird for the Panthers, as they may not opt to go for Okudah, but may instead select C.J. Henderson. That’s something to keep an eye on, but Brown is available in this mock.

Brown was a great interior disruptor at Auburn. He’s strong against the run and the pass and should be able to wreak havoc for Carolina alongside Kawann Short. Some consider him to be the second-best defensive player in this draft behind Young, so getting him at seven is a solid value for Matt Rhule’s squad.

8. Atlanta Falcons (via ARZ): CB C.J. Henderson, Florida. I’m making the Cardinals trade down from this spot because 1) I think they’re likely to and 2) few players available here are a nice fit for them. So, moving down to recoup the second-round pick that they lost in the DeAndre Hopkins trade seems like a solid move.

That said, the Falcons want to move up and add an impact player on the defensive side of the ball. They have minimal corner talent on the roster right now and aren’t likely to get either Okudah or C.J. Henderson at No. 16. By moving up for Henderson, they get a true No. 1 corner to go with their improved pass rush. Javon Kinlaw and Isaiah Simmons are also options here, but I think Henderson fills the team’s biggest need.
