Reviewing Ron Rivera’s first-round draft history with the Panthers
Conclusion
Overall, Rivera’s resume showcases one big thing. He certainly knows how to find talent in the first round. And though not all of his picks have been perfect, only a select number have been true busts.
There are caveats to crediting Rivera with every one of these picks. As mentioned earlier, Gettleman and Hurney helped him to make some decisions on each matter. But there’s no doubt that the veteran coach had some say in what would happen to help the team improve.
What can the Redskins take away from this as they prepare for their first draft with Rivera at the helm? Simply that he knows how to evaluate talent and fit, especially in the first round.
And if he believes that there’s a player that the Redskins should take, it’s probably best that the team listens to him. After all, three of his previous nine first-round picks have become first-team All-Pros.
We’ll soon see what Rivera can do in his first year working in tandem with Smith. And maybe he’ll have a chance to draft his fourth, first-round All-Pro in this year’s draft.
