7. player. 87. . Cornerback. Carolina Panthers. Jeff Okudah

Jacob: I have to stay, I respect the boldness of the Jordan Love pick, but I will be stunned if he goes before Justin Herbert. But anything is possible in the NFL Draft!

Now, onto this pick. The Panthers are well-positioned to add the best player available with the seventh pick overall. They’re set to be a rebuilding team this season as Matt Rhule and Joe Brady try to shape their program and move on from Ron Rivera.

There are a number of directions in which the Panthers could go. They could stand to add some talent on the defensive line, so Derrick Brown will draw consideration. They also may be holding out hope that Isaiah Simmons makes it to their pick.

But I doubt that they’ll complain about Jeff Okudah being on the board at this juncture. The Panthers did let three of their top four corners from last season (at least in terms of snap count) walk in free agency. And the Ohio State corner is arguably the second-best defensive player in this draft behind his teammate Chase Young.

Okudah was excellent in coverage last season and showed off natural ball skills, grabbing three interceptions and recording nine pass defenses, as a No. 1 corner. He’s a solid athlete and he simply knows how to play the cornerback position. He should be a success at the NFL level and will be a great No. 1 option for the Panthers.

Okudah (6-foot-1, 205 pounds) will have a chance to take over for James Bradberry who the Panthers lost in free agency to the New York Giants. He’ll be a nice complement to the speedy Donte Jackson while Corn Elder, Dominique Hatfield, and any other play the Panthers add in the draft or free agency can battle for the slot job.
