Ross Cockrell. 5. player. 87. . Cornerback. Carolina Panthers

The Redskins have signed a handful of players with ties to Ron Rivera. Could they decide to go after another one like Ross Cockrell?

Cockrell isn’t exactly a household name. And he’s bounced around the league since being a fourth-round pick by the Bills during the 2014 NFL Draft. But he’s a solid inside/outside corner who can start in a pinch and provide excellent depth at the right price.

Cockrell has spent each of the past two seasons in Carolina. He missed all of 2018 with a broken leg but remained with the team in 2019. He played in 14 games (11 starts) and logged 62 tackles, two interceptions, and eight pass defenses during that campaign.

In coverage, Cockrell was strong. He allowed a passer rating of just 68.1 while being targeted 67 times for the Panthers. He was a solid inside/outside starter and could play any corner position for the team.

Cockrell’s weakness is his tackling ability. He missed 11 tackles last season and doesn’t exactly have a big frame (6-foot-even, 190 pounds). So, it’s not likely that the 28-year-old will improve that much moving forward. But still, his coverage skills are his real selling point.

Had the Redskins not already signed Fuller, Cockrell might make more sense, as his best position is in the slot. But he did play 385 snaps outside last year and 253 in the slot, so perhaps the Redskins will like his outside ability enough to bring him in. Or maybe they’ll play Fuller on the outside more. Either could work.

Cockrell would be a nice, proven depth option that wouldn’t be too expensive. He’s a great high-floor candidate if the Redskins just want to add some experienced, proven depth to help potentially replace Dunbar.
