Redskins: How Adrian Peterson’s career has mirrored Marcus Allen’s
By Kyle Hundley
How will Adrian Peterson’s 2020 season look with the Redskins?
Adrian Peterson will be 35 this season. When Marcus Allen was 35, he ran for 890 yards and five touchdowns on 207 carries, nearly identical numbers to what Peterson had in 2019 (211 carries for 898 yards and five touchdowns). The following season, Allen had 206 carries for 830 yards and nine touchdowns. Will Peterson have a season similar to that one? I don’t think he’ll get that many carries, but I do believe he will still be productive in 2020.
With the Redskins exercising his option for 2020, Peterson still figures to have a role in the offense. Derrius Guice looked good in limited action last year before his season was cut short. He figures to have a bigger role in the offense this coming season. The Redskins also drafted Bryce Love in the fourth-round in the 2019 NFL Draft, someone with a lot of potential.
While Peterson is unlikely to carry it over 200 times like he has the last two seasons with those two healthy, there is no reason why he couldn’t finish with around 96 to 128 carries this season (around six to eight a game) as Guice starts to take on a greater workload and Love finds a role within the offense.
Season Prediction: 108 carries for 465 yards and four touchdowns.
When Marcus Allen was 37, he had 124 carries for 505 yards and 11 touchdowns. I predict Peterson will have a season pretty similar to that. Hitting 108 carries would mean getting seven carries a game, and 465 yards will put him on pace with the 4.3 average he had last year. I don’t think he’ll have 11 touchdowns, but I do think he will get some carries down near the end-zone and capitalize on his opportunities.
If Guice and Love aren’t able to stay on the field, I could easily see Peterson coming close to what he did last year if the Redskins need him to carry more of the load.
Adrian Peterson and Marcus Allen are two all-time great running backs, and 2020 will be an exciting season for the Redskins’ Peterson as he continues to chase Allen’s touchdown mark.
