One player at each position Redskins should target after NFL Combine
So much of the energy from the combine was focused on the performance of the top-four offensive tackles. And rightfully so.
Mehki Becton logged a 5.11 in the 40-yard dash despite weighing in at 364 pounds (357 after his weight re-check, but still amazing). Tristan Wirfs looked amazing in the on-field drills and posted unbelievable athletic testing numbers as well including a 1.69 time in the 40-yard split. Jedrick Wills looked really good in the on-field drills and posted solid times. And while Andrew Thomas‘ times weren’t as impressive as the top four, they were still really good and he comported himself very well in the on-field drills.
So, why are none of these four players the ones the Redskins should target? It’s pretty simple. They’re basically guaranteed to go in the top 15 to 20 picks barring some big-time changes ahead of the draft. And while the ‘Skins could target one in a trade down, they’re more likely to go with a defensive player like Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons, or Jeffrey Okudah in the first round.
Washington Commanders
That said, this is a deep tackle class. And there are plenty of guys that could be available in the middle rounds that the Redskins could consider. One such option would be Georgia’s Isaiah Wilson. While he got less attention than his teammate Thomas during his time with the Bulldogs, he’s still a good-looking prospect who has a lot of potential which he demonstrated at the combine.
Wilson tipped the scales at 350 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame and looked good in the on-field drills. He moved well for his size and clocked a 5.32-second 40-yard dash despite being the second-heaviest player on the field. That’s not too bad and when coupled with his work in the drills, it should help him out.
Wilson did have a minor drawback as it took him 8.26 seconds to complete the 3-cone drill. But nonetheless, he did enough to help himself improve his stock. The Redskins could certainly take a look at him in the middle rounds of the draft as they look to find a potential successor to Trent Williams while also upgrading the swing tackle position.
Another option who impressed was Boise State offensive tackle Ezra Cleveland. However, the Redskins may have a tough time landing him without acquiring a second-round pick. But if they end up trading Williams and getting that compensation, Cleveland would emerge as a great option. He ran a sub-5-second time in the 40-yard dash and showed off really good athleticism to go along with his 6-foot-6 frame.
