One player at each position Redskins should target after NFL Combine
The 2020 NFL Draft is weak at the tight end position which also means the positional rankings were fluid heading into the NFL Combine. And few tight end prospects did more to help their draft stock than Missouri’s Albert Okwuegbunam.
Okwuegbunam’s claim to fame at the combine was his 40 time. He blazed a 4.49 time in the 40-yard dash that shocked many watching and was by far the best number posted by a tight end this year. It was known that Okwuegbunam had good athletic ability. But that type of speed is rare, and his time was ranked the fourth-fastest by a tight end since 2003.
Aside from the 40-yard dash, Okwuegbunam didn’t do much. He skipped the other athletic tests and did some field work, but the run was enough to heat up his draft stock once again.
It’s notable that Okwuegbunam was once considered to be a potential first-round prospect. He just had his stock fall due to injuries and the fact that he became progressively less productive in each of his three years at Missouri. But if he can interview well and continue to work out well after the combine, he should get a chance to show teams that he deserves to be among the first tight ends that come off the board in 2020.
The Redskins should strongly consider Okwuegbunam in the third or fourth round. He would give them a boost at one of their weakest positions and could emerge as a serious receiving threat at the next level. The injury concerns may be enough to scare some teams off, but if the ‘Skins invest in a free-agent starter and add Okwuegbunam, they’ll be able to keep him healthy and get him up to speed on NFL conditioning to improve his injury tolerance.
Washington needs upside at tight end. Okwuegbunam could certainly provide that if he’s on the board in the middle rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.
