One player at each position Redskins should target after NFL Combine
The 2020 NFL Draft class is stacked at the receiver position. As a result, some prospects have slipped through the cracks a little bit, and one of them is Denzel Mims.
Mims was my top receiver to watch at the combine this past week. He was highly productive at Baylor and on tape, he showed good athletic ability and a knack for making unbelievable catches with his lanky 6-foot-3 frame. At the combine, he showed off all his skills and did a lot to prove that he belongs in the discussion as a second-round pick.
Mims started off well by blazing a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash. He was widely expected to run a time that was roughly in the mid-to-high 4.4s, so shaving about 0.1 seconds off his expected time was excellent news.
From there, Mims continued to find success and posted a ridiculous 6.66 time in the 3-cone drill. That was nearly 0.3 seconds better than the next closest participant. His footwork during this test was excellent and it should help to prove that he has the technique needed to be a great route runner at the next level. He won’t just be a deep threat and contested catch playmaker.
Speaking of catching, Mims demonstrated great skill in that area during the on-field drills. He made each catch look easy thanks to his wide catch radius and top-tier ball tracking ability. Essentially, he backed up everything that people saw on tape and more.
While Mims may well go in the second round after that combine performance, it’s still possible that he could fall to the third. Why is that? There are simply so many quality receivers in this draft class that some are going to have to fall out of circumstance.
If Mims is somehow on the board at the beginning of the third round, the ‘Skins shouldn’t wait long before passing in their draft card. He would add a big-bodied, big-play receiver to their offense and that size is the only thing that their young receiving corps is missing. Again, Mims may not make it there, but they should certainly highlight his name in the lead-up to the 2020 draft.
