Of all the top quarterback prospects that the Redskins need to watch, Tua Tagovailoa is the most important. And that’s because there are some questions about his overall health that lead to him being a volatile pick.

Tagovailoa was once considered to be the likely No. 1 overall pick in this class. But two things brought that into question. First was the rise of Joe Burrow, who had an elite season in his final year at LSU and led the Tigers to a National Championship. The second was that Tagovailoa suffered a potentially devastating hip injury against Mississippi State that knocked him out for the season. And made his status ahead of the 2020 season murky.

Since then, Tagovailoa has been trending in a positive direction. He has healed up and appeared to be moving well at the NFL Combine. He’s not yet ready to work out or throw yet, but he will likely throw at Alabama’s Pro Day. So, that’s a good sign, as there were questions about whether or not that would be possible.

Beyond that, Tagovailoa’s medical checks have reportedly come back “overwhelmingly positive” so far, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. So, that knocks one of the biggest red flags off Tagovailoa’s resume, or it at least lessens the concerns that teams would have there.

So, what exactly does this mean for the Redskins? It means that if a team like the Miami Dolphins or Los Angeles Chargers want to move up to get Tagovailoa, their first real chance to do so will be at the Redskins’ No. 2 pick. The Redskins will need to know exactly how each squad values Tua so they can try to get the most out of any potential trade they’d take while also weighing what it would take for them to move down and miss out on Chase Young.

It’s also worth noting that if the Detroit Lions end up in the quarterback market, which is possible pending the health of Matthew Stafford, they could be interested in Tagovailoa. And if the Redskins are shopping the pick, the Lions could offer them a second-round selection to swap spots with the ‘Skins just to guarantee that a team like the Dolphins or Chargers doesn’t blow them away and cause the Lions to miss out on an opportunity to draft Tagovailoa. That’s a long-shot, but it can’t be ruled out.

The Redskins will also be watching Burrow and Justin Herbert as other top quarterback options in this draft class. But Tagovailoa is the one that would have the most direct impact on the team’s plans moving forward.
