Be Mine: EDGE Chase Young

The Washington Redskins have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. And most — not all, but most — Redskins fans want the ‘Skins to take the Ohio State product.

Young was arguably the best player in college football last season. And at the very least, he was the best defensive player. For the Ohio State defense, Young racked up a whopping 16.5 sacks despite being double and even triple-teamed at times by his opposition. And that was a year after totaling 10.5 sacks as a sophomore.

Edge rusher may not be among the Redskins biggest needs. They have Ryan Kerrigan, a veteran stalwart, and Montez Sweat, who had a great rookie season for the team. However, Kerrigan will turn 32 in August and the team may not be able to use Ryan Anderson as an end in their new 4-3 scheme. So, they could use some depth and an eventual successor for Kerrigan.

Could the Redskins trade down and target another defensive player like LB Isaiah Simmons or CB Jeffrey Okudah? Sure. They would fill bigger needs, after all. But is there a more talented player that the Redskins could land in this draft class than Young? Probably not, at least on paper.

Nothing should ever be ruled out in the draft process. And it’s well within the realm of possibility that the Redskins could trade down.

But for the time being, many Redskins fans have one message for Chase Young. Be mine. They want the talented sack artist to turn their front four into one of the best units in the league. And if they get him, they could have a San Francisco 49ers-style pass rush to build around.
