Kyle Hundley: OT Tristan Wirfs, Iowa

I know if the Redskins don’t select Chase Young, Isaiah Simmons is going to be a popular choice. So, for the sake of discussion, I’m going to pick Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs. I wrote a piece about him in October, so he’s someone I’ve been extremely high on for a while.

Whether or not Trent Williams does come back with the firing of Bruce Allen and head trainer Larry Hess, the Redskins absolutely must come away from the draft (or free agency) with a tackle, as it is a need for them, in my opinion.

Williams is going to be 32 in July, and right tackle Morgan Moses took a huge step backward this year. While he has battled injuries, Geron Christian has shown little in the two years he’s been on the Redskins since arriving as a 2018 third-round pick. Donald Penn, who started at left tackle in place of Williams in 2019, is going to be 37 in April and will be a free agent this offseason.

Wirfs is going to shoot up a lot of draft boards when the combine comes as he is an athletic freak at the tackle position. Wirfs played primarily on the right side in college but showed he can play on the left side as well. Wirfs could start over Moses on his familiar right side for a year, then potentially move him to the left side, similar to what the Kansas City Chiefs did with Eric Fisher.

I know picking an offensive lineman is never a sexy pick, but I do believe Wirfs can be a Pro Bowl player and will be a big-time upgrade at the tackle position. He can start from day one and be a fixture along the offensive line for the next decade as Washington looks to create a new group of “hogs”.
