A story of lifelong Washington Redskins fandom

Hall of Fame and first game at FedEx Field
In 2008, I traveled Canton for the Hall of Fame Induction of Art Monk and Darrell Green. This was my first time being surrounded by more than just a handful of Redskins fans. As I boarded a shuttle bus from the parking lot to the stadium, the fans were singing “Hail to the Redskins”. I was in complete awe, overcome with emotion, I shed some tears. The weekend was filled with tailgating and Redskins stories.
I’ve never felt so at home in my life. I found the place and people that made me most happy.
In 2012, I was able to attend my first-ever home game at FedEx Field. The game was also the first home game for RG3. I had dream seats, which perfectly described my day, a dream. The Redskins lost an explosive and fun game 38-31, but it didn’t matter. After all these years of watching score updates on the bottom of the screen as a young kid, then watching the games on TV when the NFL package was released, maybe going to a handful of games on the road in whatever city I may have lived at the time.
I had finally made it to a home game! I found my element and my people that shared the same passion as I did.
I’m fortunate to make it to many games now, both at home and on the road. But I will never forget where it all began. Like the team, my journey has been a roller coaster ride and I’ve loved every second of it.
My fandom that started as a boy who wanted to be like my Dad to support his team, has developed into my own. It’s part of my identity and my passion for the team makes supporting them my favorite hobby. I’ve built relationships, I enjoy the community and the camaraderie it brings.
I hope to bring a positive influence with my columns that include taking a look at situations from a different perspective, a fan’s point of view.
Ultimately, I’m just a fan, the Redskins are my team. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
