No. 5 – The team evaluation continues

It’s been a month since the Redskins hired veteran head coach Ron Rivera to lead them in 2020 and beyond, and for that month, Rivera and his staff members have been evaluating the Redskins team from last season, presumably deciding who will form their core moving forward.

In February, that evaluation will continue. Free agency isn’t until March, and the 2020 NFL Draft isn’t until late April, so February represents the calm before the storm; a time in which Rivera and his coaches can continue to do foundational studying on the team they’re inheriting, in order to make informed decisions on the futures of almost 90 players.

Some players will make those decisions easy for them. Tight end Vernon Davis retired yesterday, relinquishing his relatively non-valuable contract. But the Redskins, with a relatively young roster, won’t see many retirements come their way. Thus, Rivera will have some decisions to make, on the contracts that provide the least value.
