The Redskins selected Bashaud Breeland in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. While the Clemson product wasn’t always perfect for the squad, he did a solid job as their No. 2 corner for four seasons.

Breeland became a starter quickly in Washington and was used at both corner and safety during his rookie season. After that though, he was pretty much exclusively used on the outside. Over the course of his four years in Washington, Breeland played in 60 games and 58 of them were starts.

While Breeland did have some issues in coverage at times — and against top-tier receivers, he was frequently torched — it is worth noting that he played under Jim Haslett, Joe Barry, and Greg Manusky during his time with the squad. That’s not exactly a great group of defensive coordinators. He still proved to be a playmaker at times and totaled 270 tackles, 60 pass defenses, and eight interceptions with the Redskins.

Washington decided to move on from Breeland in the 2018 offseason because the squad was confident in Quinton Dunbar serving as the No. 2 corner. That turned out to be a correct assumption, and Dunbar ended up being the top corner last year, but the regression of Josh Norman did open up some other holes in the secondary.

Could Breeland have helped plug that? Probably. But it’s also worth noting that Breeland was dealing with some injury concerns during that offseason that led many to believe he was a risky signing. He had a deal with the Carolina Panthers voided because of a failed physical and he wasn’t picked up until halfway through the season by the Green Bay Packers.

Breeland joined the Chiefs in 2019 and has largely served as their No. 1 corner in their corner-by-committee style in the secondary. He’ll have his work cut out for him against a versatile 49ers receiving corps, but he sure has made an impact as a decent outside starter.
