Step Four – Free Agents To Target

According to Over The Cap, the Redskins currently have just under $45 million in cap space for 2020.  In some of the aforementioned scenarios, the team could have anywhere from $40 million to $95 million in cap space when free agency commences.

Let’s go with a slightly conservative figure and use $65 million as a baseline for this blueprint.  That could allow the front office to pursue five or six quality free agents this spring.

Here is a list of players they could consider:  OT D.J. Humphries, DE Shaq Lawson, QB Blake Bortles, TE (RFA) Blake Jarwin, FS Tre Boston, OT Germain Ifedi, WR Robby Anderson, OG Joe Thuney, CB James Bradberry, Edge/DE Yannick Ngakoue, OLB Bud Dupree, OT Jack Conklin, CB Byron Jones, OLB Vic Beasley, WR Amari Cooper, TE Jacob Hollister (RFA), and FS Anthony Harris.

The Redskins simply can’t add all of these prospects, but let’s take a look at several players that could be targeted.

Head coach Ron Rivera could make an effort to sign a pair of his former players from this list. Look for Boston and Bradbury of the Panthers to be prime targets.

Tight end is a definite need for the team and they could try to sign Hollister of the Seahawks or Jarwin of the Cowboys. Both are rising stars and either one could be added to the roster if their teams do not match the offers.

Conklin could be signed if the team moves on from an underperforming Morgan Moses.  Could wide receiver Amari Cooper be a target?  It’s possible, but there will be some attractive prospects at wide receiver in the middle rounds of the upcoming draft.

One player to keep an eye on this offseason could be quarterback Derek Carr of the Raiders.  He is a favorite of current defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.  Carr is said to be upset with the Tom Brady rumors surrounding the Las Vegas Raiders.

Could a trade for Carr materialize? The Redskins could offer a lower round selection for Carr and the Raiders may pitch in some cap relief – much like the Broncos did last year for Case Keenum.  Keep an eye on this possible story.

Free agency will be here before you know it.  How active will the Redskins be in February and March?  A new regime makes for many uncertainties in the coming weeks, but changes are definitely coming.  The Riggo’s Rag team will be here to cover it all for you.
