The guard/center position is one that will be a need for the Redskins in some way, shape, or form. The team is set to see both Brandon Scherff and Ereck Flowers hit free agency and even if they bring one or both back, they’ll still need depth on the interior.

The Redskins have lacked a strong backup center since they signed John Sullivan after the Minnesota Vikings released him. And Sullivan actually mostly served as a starter for the ‘Skins in his brief time in Washington. It’s possible that Lloyd Cushenberry could fix that issue for the team.

Cushenberry has impressed during the Senior Bowl and has been one of the best interior offensive linemen in Mobile. At 6-foot-4, 311 pounds, he has a powerfully built frame and should be NFL ready from day one. And it’s worth noting that his performance was part of the reason that Joe Burrow and Clyde Edwards-Helaire had so much success last season.

If Cushenberry continues to block well during the Senior Bowl, the Redskins could look to select him in the in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He would provide some competition for Wes Martin at either guard spot — if Flowers and Scherff aren’t both re-signed — and even if both are, Cushenberry could push Chase Roullier for a starting job.

I’ve been in the camp that Roullier is good enough to get by as a starter, but if Cushenberry looks like an upgrade, the team can plug him in and move Roullier to the backup role. That would kill two birds with one stone and help the squad continue to stockpile depth on the offensive line.

The interior line may not end up being a big need when it’s all said and done, so any potential interest in Cushenberry could wane. Still, for the time being, the Redskins should watch Cushenberry closely as it’s possible that pending the results of free agency, the squad could really use him.
