Mike McCarthy

It took a while for the Cowboys to finally fire Jason Garrett, but they did, and now former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy will be the next head coach in Dallas.

McCarthy brings with him 125 wins, 77 losses, and two ties from his previous 13-year stint in Wisconsin, but also a new attitude and a new philosophy. McCarthy spent a year away from football after being fired by the Packers, and over the course of that year, he reportedly studied ways to improve as a head coach in the NFL.

After his hiatus, McCarthy has returned with a new emphasis on analytics. He’ll reportedly be creating a 14-person department specifically for analytics, win probabilities, and other modern concepts. He’ll also be using PFF stats, Next Gen Stats, and GPS data to make decisions as well.

Committing to analytics use is just the first part of the puzzle. One must then act on that commitment. But for the Cowboys, at this stage, a commitment is good enough, and McCarthy’s staff is similarly promising. Kellen Moore returns as the offensive coordinator, and helped Dak Prescott and the offense reach stellar efficiency marks last year. Now armed with a fully staffed analytics department, Moore’s offense could rise to a whole new level.

Re-tread coaches are never the most inspiring hires, but McCarthy brings with him a new outlook, and for a team that is essentially ready to win now, talent-wise, McCarthy is a nice match for what needs to happen. He brings an established old-school leadership style, and a new emphasis on analytics, a mix that could yield quick, enviable results.
