NFL Draft Day 2

Round 3, Pick 2. OT Prince Tega Wanogho, Auburn

The Redskins are without a pick in the second round of the draft because they traded up in 2019 to get Montez Sweat. Sweat had 7.0 sacks as a rookie and started to look more comfortable at the NFL level as the season went along, so the deal was a solid one. But not having a Day 2 pick does hurt their chances of adding some extra receiving talent or a top-tier tackle.

As mentioned earlier, the Redskins could trade Trent Williams to try to acquire a second-round pick. But for now, we won’t be projecting that to happen.

At this point in the draft, the Redskins need to do what they can to address the tackle position. Donald Penn is still around as a stopgap option, but they’ll need somebody to develop behind him as Geron Christian doesn’t seem like the answer.

In the draft simulator, Prince Tega Wanogho from Auburn was the best tackle on the board. He is a massive 6-foot-7, 305-pound blocker and has the tools needed to be a quality left tackle at the next level. That said, he’s raw. And that will scare off some ‘Skins fans, as Christian was “raw” and hasn’t worked out.

But that said, the team has a new coaching staff that could develop the tackle talent a bit better. And they did work well to turn Ty Nsekhe into a great swing tackle while Morgan Moses became a very good starter for a few years before regressing badly this year. So, perhaps they will find a way to get the most out of Wanogho.

This selection would be more palatable if Trent Williams returned, but in a strong tackle class, Wanogho could emerge as a hidden gem. He has the talent and athletic ability needed to do that, at the very least.
